George King delivered one of the standout performances of his <\/span><\/span>young <\/span><\/span>endurance career at the <\/span><\/span>2026<\/span><\/span> Dubai 24 Hours, only for a freak mechanical failure to deny him and Haas RT a potential overall victory.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Switching to yet another new machine \u2014 the Audi R8 LMS GT3 \u2014 and joining a new team in Haas RT, King linked up with fellow JWR drivers James Winslow, Alex Bukhantsov, Alim Geshev and Damian Ciosek <\/span><\/span>for his fifth appearance at the season-opening endurance<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Despite limited running prior to qualifying, the Briton was immediately on the pace <\/span><\/span>and went on to <\/span><\/span>set the fastest time of the Haas entry in qualifying, secur<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> fifth in class on the grid <\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span> underlining the rapid adaptation that has become a hallmark of his <\/span><\/span>sportscar<\/span><\/span> r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough I am familiar with the Dubai circuit after racing here many times before, the Audi was another different car to adapt to, so I\u2019m delighted to have been on the pace almost straight away,\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span> King noted. <\/span><\/span>\u201cTo post the fastest time for Haas RT in qualifying was a great start to the weekend.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Winslow took the start and delivered an impressive opening stint of almost two hours, carving through the field before handing over to King, <\/span><\/span>who then produced <\/span><\/span>one of the drives of the race <\/span><\/span>to bring the #2 machine into podium contention<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Rejoining in 16th position overall, King surged through the order to climb to <\/span><\/span>run <\/span><\/span>third outright during a relentless two-hour stint, executing decisive overtakes and capitalising on sharp strategy calls from <\/span><\/span>his <\/span><\/span>engineer. The Haas RT Audi soon assumed control of the race and, for the next eight hours, led overall \u2014 stretching an advantage over <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>WRT <\/span><\/span>BMW <\/span><\/span>entries featuring <\/span><\/span>several <\/span><\/span>factory-backed drivers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Disaster, however, struck while <\/span><\/span>the pale blue Audi was<\/span><\/span> leading. <\/span><\/span>With Winslow back behind the wheel, <\/span><\/span>12 laps of strong pace <\/span><\/span>were immediately curtailed when<\/span><\/span> the rear-right wheel worked loose and detached from the car. Winslow was forced to stop on circuit and await recovery, <\/span><\/span>powerless to prevent the #2 losing its advantage<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although <\/span><\/span>Haas RT <\/span><\/span>worked <\/span><\/span>impressively <\/span><\/span>to <\/span><\/span>return the Audi to <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>action in short order, a secondary issue with the rear-right brake assembly followed, <\/span><\/span>as t<\/span><\/span>he retaining pin for the brake pads \u2014 damaged in the earlier incident \u2014 failed at Turn 10. <\/span><\/span>Entering<\/span><\/span> the circuit\u2019s heaviest braking zone <\/span><\/span>and w<\/span><\/span>ith the pedal dropping to the floor, Winslow skilfully avoided four cars <\/span><\/span>before<\/span><\/span> limp<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> back to the pits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A further 30 minutes was lost replacing brakes and bleeding the system after brake fluid escaped in the failure <\/span><\/span>and, when King strapped in and returned to the track<\/span><\/span>, the team was 20 laps down. <\/span><\/span>Fuelled by the frustration of seeing his previous good work undone by misfortune, the Briton got his head down and was<\/span><\/span> immediately match<\/span><\/span>ing the pace of the<\/span><\/span> top five <\/span><\/span>runners<\/span><\/span> \u2014 <\/span><\/span>lap-times <\/span><\/span>comparable to factory drivers \u2014 as Haas RT began an<\/span><\/span>other<\/span><\/span> inspired recovery. Over the remaining 15 hours, the team charged from 40th to 21st overall and fifth in class, regaining two laps on the leaders and overtaking multiple rivals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking,\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span> King admitted. <\/span><\/span>\u201cWe had the pace to win <\/i><\/span><\/span>so, f<\/i><\/span><\/span>or something as small as a wheel coming loose to stop what could have been a career-defining result, <\/i><\/span><\/span>it<\/i><\/span><\/span> is tough to take. <\/i><\/span><\/span>W<\/i><\/span><\/span>e drove a perfect race otherwise \u2014 no contact, no other mechanical issues.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m always thankful to race in such an iconic event, in cars like this and against the level of competition we had. Thank you to Haas <\/i><\/span><\/span>RT <\/i><\/span><\/span>for having me \u2014 and to my co-drivers for trusting me to help them succeed.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
