KING DOMINATES ON GULF RADICAL DEBUT

"It feels a bit unreal to be a champion so early in my career. It's been an amazing winter season, with an outcome I could only dream of. It was great to add more podiums to my record, and to set new marks for both wins and points scored in a single GRC campaign. A new lap record was the icing on a very successful weekend."

MEET GEORGE KING...

First racing memory:
In terms of actually being behind the wheel, it would have been a birthday party at Rayleigh Indoor Karting.

Motorsport Heroes:
Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton — good English drivers 😂 — and my dad, obviously, as he used to race and has helped me so much.

How I got into racing:
I'd done a very small amount of arrive-and-drive karting when I was younger but stopped when I went to secondary school. Then, almost 10 years later, COVID happened, my dad bought a racing simulator and I was on it all day during the first lockdown. When I started winning races on the sim, I thought why not have a proper crack at racing after lockdown finished — and here I am!

First race:
At Silverstone, driving a Mazda MX-5 in September 2020 — just after lockdown one.

Favourite circuits:
Brands Hatch as it’s my local track. Imola is mega. Le Mans is mega too. Monza is fun. Cadwell Park is tricky but fun. A good mix really.

If I could own any car...
My road car would probably be a McLaren Senna as I love a McLaren. As for a track car, it would either have to be a current Le Mans hypercar (I'm not fussy!) or a 2007 McLaren F1 car as that's my favourite livery.

Superstitions:
I always wear my dad's St Christopher necklace in a race, but I don’t really tap door frames or anything weird.

"There's not a huge backstory to my helmet design. My dad used to drive and had a painted helmet, so I based my design on that. It's evolved quite a bit in the last year or so, from being a pretty close copy of my dad's to adopting a more modern look. I think the colours really stand out and the design is a bit different to a lot of the geometric styles out there. I expect I'll tweak it more as my career progresses but, for now, I really like this look."
